James Franco seems to have taken his admirable post-graduate collegiate work to heart, directing and starring in this adaptation of William Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying.” The film is set to run in the Un Certain Regard portion of the Cannes Film Festival that begins later this week.

Check out the trailer here: http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/as-i-lay-dying-trailer-cannes-james-franco/

What do you think? Kind of hard to get much handle on what the trailer is showing without, you know, peeking at the source material there.

Two erotic publishing phenomena, 40 years apart, are in the news today regarding film adaptations of each.

First, “Fear of Flying,” Erica Jong’s zipless sex hit, is finally headed to the big screen, reports Deadline’s http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/before-50-shades-there-was-erica-jongs-fear-of-flying-thats-getting-a-movie-after-40-years-in-print/

This could be interesting.

Then Mike, as he puts it in his inimitable Irish New York way, calls bullshit on breathless media reports that Joe Wright, most recently director of “Anna Karenina,” will be helm the movie version of “50 Shades of Grey”: http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/are-journos-overheated-on-naming-joe-wright-the-director-of-50-shades-of-grey/

The reports, Mike says, are as overheated as the trilogy’s sex scenes.

So, who would you like to see directing “50 Shades”? And what do you think about a “Fear of Flying” movie? Is it about time?

Ben Affleck is already back at work, and lots of it, and with material from the writer, Dennis Lehane, whose “Gone Baby Gone” was the basis for his first directorial debut. Now, with an Oscar for producing “Argo,” Affleck is back at the producer/director/star/screenwriter gig with another Lehane property.

Have to say that, given the quality streak Big Ben’s been on in recent years, I’m really looking forward to what he does with this latest project. How about you? Stoked to see his project?

Well, it ain’t subtle and it’s definitely not safe for the workplace, but the trailer for “Filth,” the film featuring James McAvoy and based on the Irvine Welsh novel of the same name, is here and rather entertaining in it’s own Welshian nihilistic fashion.

Check it out here: http://www.deadline.com/2013/04/hot-red-band-trailer-filth/

And, as you may have divined, they’ve also released a poster for the film that I’ve included here.

Truman Capote’s original manuscript for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is going on the auction block, along with a batch of other Hollywood material. The auction house estimates it’ll fetch $250,000, enough for quite a few breakfasts, and dinners, at Tiffany’s.

This new poster for the film adaptation of Orson Scott Card sci-fi novel “Ender’s Game” doesn’t betray a lot of the story line (not surprising given that it’s still more than seven months away).
But for those who don’t mind Card’s cultural controversies while enjoying his storylines, the film itself may be stirring some true anticipation.

Speaking at a “What’s Trending” online panel on the future of TV last night, Kevin Smith said he’s pondering how best to continue the “Clerks” story, and probably will look at writing a book, released episodically so fans can have input on the development of the story about the two central characters from the first time they meet.
Deadline has all of the story (and a video link to his “What’s Trending” appearance) here: http://www.deadline.com/2013/02/video-kevin-smith-clerks-the-future-of-online-tv/
What do you think of his idea for a book, especially with fan input? In the video, he’s really funny and thoughtful about being creative and in control and evolving the ways he likes to tell a story now, and what motivates him (besides lots of weed).
