My latest Deadline Awards Watch podcast with Pete Hammond looks back at Roger Ebert and forward at the future of film critics; examines one of Pete’s dead-lock likely entries (a TV movie at that) in this year’s Cannes Film Festival; and how Tom Cruise was doing his level best at last night’s “Oblivion” premiere to ensure his new sci-fi epic’s name does not become its fate.
Pete also talks about this week’s films, including the Jackie Robinson biopic “42,” the terrific “Disconnect” featuring a very good Jason Bateman; and a not very good “To The Wonder,” directed by Terrence Malick and starring a nearly silent Ben Affleck.

Deadline’s latest podcast featuring Awards Columnist Pete Hammond (and me) is here. We talk about the shifting schedule for Oscar ceremonies in 2014 and 2015; the refusal of defenders of the Foreign Language category to change the way that winner is determined; and Pete’s picks among a so-so crop of weekend films.
He’s a fan of “The Place Beyond the Pines.” As for the rest of the weekend’s debuts (“G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” “The Host,” “Tyler Perry’s Temptation”), eh, not so much.

We talk in this episode about whether the new Oscar schedule that pushed up the nominations process affected the contests; any other lessons learned from the telecast itself; pitfalls for first-time winners and why some people keep getting nominated and never win; and some awards-worthy films likely to occupy our attention in 2013.

"It was a physical challenge for sure. Any amount of pain I dealt with, was my own choice, but it was minimal daily. He left a lot of amazing writing behind that I checked out. There was his autobiography, his poetry and an amazing Oscar-winning short film Breathing Lessons made by Jessica Yu. In trying to figure out the physicality of the part, all these materials were a start."

Lots of Silver Linings for this "Playbook" at Spirit Awards

“Silver Linings Playbook” wrapped up a big day with its 4th win, for Best Feature Film at the Independent Spirit Awards. Deadline has all the coverage from the show.

One can’t help wondering what it’ll mean for the show’s prospects in tomorrow’s Oscars, where it’s a bit of a dark-horse candidate to win Best Picture against “Argo,” which steamrolled competition during all the precursor awards ceremonies leading up to this weekend.

It does bode good prospects for Jennifer Lawrence, who won Best Supporting Female at the Spirit Awards and is one of three favorites for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars.

"There were week-long discussions with Steven Soderbergh about the right thong to wear and that turned into a stalemate. I brought up Jim Morrison as being an influence for my character Dallas. But then I got fitted into these ballet slippers and got this Richard Simmons/Mikhail Baryshnikov thing going and found this obsessed, but comedic route toward the character. Steven told me, ‘If you play this straight and serious, it will be hilarious.’"

Matthew McConaughey on his character in “Magic Mike,” for which he won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male.

So far, it’s been a very nice afternoon for “Silver Linings Playbook” and a couple of other films that are also nominated for Oscars.

"I lived Wallflower. I was one as a kid, and there was this cute girl who actually gave me a tape of ‘Sleep’ by The Smiths. Coincidentally, I just met Morrissey at a party and he told me he loved the movie, and that meant a lot."

“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” director Steven Chbosky, backstage at the Independent Spirit Awards. He gave a ton of credit to Emma Watson, the “Harry Potter” actress who helped push through the studio support needed to get the film made.
