Tom Cruise has signed on for another “Mission: Impossible” film, the fifth in a revived franchise that last time racked up the biggest cumulative box office ever for a Cruise film (which, given his history, is saying something).  Now, says Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. in reporting the exclusive story, they need to hash out a few other things, like who’ll direct: http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/tom-cruise-signs-deal-to-star-in-mission-impossible-5-will-chris-mcquarrie-direct/ Who would you like to see helm what will no doubt be called (except perhaps in Britain, where there might be a branding issue with a certain notable wing of that country’s government) M:I5?

Deadline is reporting Tom Cruise is eyeing the lead role in a reboot of a second big espionage show from the 1960s, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” At this rate, he’ll be starring in all the redone spy shows from the Cold War, except maybe, possibly, James Bond.  (Read Mike Fleming’s exclusive story here: http://www.deadline.com/2013/03/tom-cruise-eyeing-the-man-from-u-n-c-l-e-with-guy-ritchie-at-warner-bros/ )  Could be cool, though that show was always a bit more wise to the joke and ironic than “Mission: Impossible.” What do you think of this?

Paramount releases "Jack Reacher" trailer with Tom Cruise

Hmmmm, check out this trailer for the Tom Cruise action film “Jack Reacher.” Fans of the original series of Reacher books were annoyed to see Cruise in the role, given that the books feature a hulking ex-military man who is perhaps a foot taller and 100 lbs. heavier. 

Paramount is hoping they have a new franchise with this character. What do you think of the trailer? Does Cruise convincingly pull off the air of menace needed for the role?

Lots of fans of Lee Child’s “Jack Reacher” series of books have had tart things to say about Paramount’s casting of Tom Cruise as the hulking ex-military policeman in the film version. Well, here’s the first trailer for the film. What do you think, Reacher fans? Was it an overreach to choose Cruise? Or does the suddenly single one pull it off?
