Is there a link between the set of scandals and sorta scandals hitting the Obama Administration right now and what’s happening with the ratings for MSNBC, the progressive-aligned all-news channel that is seeing its numbers hit a seven-year low? FIlm executives aren’t the only ones opting for safe-bet spinoffs from existing franchises, Deadline’s TV Editor Nellie Andreeva says.  Nearly every spinoff pilot was picked up, including “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland,” which heads to Alice’s little make-believe burg with some very high-end production values (we have the trailer among Nellie’s rundowns last week of all the studios’ upfront presentations). So, Daniel Loeb is an activist, libertarian investor who helped run off Yahoo’s old CEO, went halfsies to buy Deadline’s sibling site Variety, and signed on to the Supreme Court amicus brief supporting gay marriage. Now Loeb has sent an unusually pleasant (at least for him in these often confrontational situations) letter to the president of Sony, suggesting that they work together to spin off the company’s entertainment assets.  ABC rolled out trailers for 11 of their new shows today at their advertising upfronts presentation, and Deadline has them all here: http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/abc-new-series-trailers-2013-video/ Check out the trailers. “Betrayal” is sleek and handsomely done, though it seems like it’d be better as a short-run series or even a movie, a sensation I had with a couple of the other shows as well.  The spinoff “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” has a lot of possibilities. It looks like they’ve done a good job taking a general idea and applying it in an engaging new way with the Alice in Wonderland myth.  Malin Ackerman, Bradley Whitfield and Marcia Gay Harden definitely are looking promising in “Trophy Wife.” Rebel Wilson, unsurprisingly, has some good moments in the otherwise very broad “Super Fun Night.” I’d say the same about Jimmy Caan and his co-stas in the Bad News Bear-ish “Back in the Game.”  I also liked the metaphysical premise of “Resurrection,” and it has a terrific cast (the photo is from that trailer) Check ‘em out. Fox, like NBC, rolled out trailers for a bunch of their new shows today as they made their pitches to advertisers as part of the upfronts.

I have to say the trailer for “Almost Human,” the new sci-fi show from J.J. Abrams, looks pretty terrific, and has remarkable production values for its visual effects. Check it out here: http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/fox-trailers-new-series-2013/

What do you think of “Almost Human?” How about the other trailers we have on tap there? Anything catching your eye? I was intrigued by “Sleepy Hollow,” liked SOME things about “Us & Them” and thought “Rake” might be pretty decent over time.

The others, hmm, not so much, even with excellent casts. Not sure what happened, but maybe they’ll survive long enough to be okay.
