We talk about this week’s advertising upfronts, including the CBS victory lap and whether an auto ad spending blitz will finance this year’s pricey programming; Daniel Loeb’s (and possibly Les Moonves’) plans for Sony; and National CineMedia’s whiz-bang new technologies to give exhibitors and studios more bang for their in-theater ad bucks.Listen to all that auditory goodness right here: http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/deadline-big-media-with-david-lieberman-episode-35/

So, Daniel Loeb is an activist, libertarian investor who helped run off Yahoo’s old CEO, went halfsies to buy Deadline’s sibling site Variety, and signed on to the Supreme Court amicus brief supporting gay marriage.
Now Loeb has sent an unusually pleasant (at least for him in these often confrontational situations) letter to the president of Sony, suggesting that they work together to spin off the company’s entertainment assets.
What’s that about, Deadline’s David Lieberman asks, in laying out some background on Loeb and his most interesting proposal here: http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/who-is-daniel-loeb-and-what-does-he-want-with-sony/
This is definitely one to keep watch on. It could affect Sony’s massive investments in film production and distribution, TV production, home entertainment and music. What do you think about the proposal?

Sony has unveiled plans for an animated film based on its hugely popular videogame franchise (developed by long-time game studio partner Insomniac Games) “Ratchet & Clank.”

Here are stills from the just-released teaser trailer, which is most amusing and suggests they may have a lot to work with when the film itself finally comes out in a couple of years. Catch the whole trailer here:

This is great. Director Mike Figgis, in one of his “tweet by hand” journal postings on Twitter, talks about a film he likes, then about the old Sony PD100 he used to shoot the hugely experimental film “Hotel” back in 2001.
I interviewed Figgis back then for Variety about using digital cameras (he was an early experimenter in the technologies). Fun to see him circling back to it now for something new, to get a certain old-school video look that’s just a bit more messy.

Sony is pondering a feature-length take on the beloved “Little House on the Prairie” books (and long-running TV show with Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert), Deadline’s Mike Fleming is reporting. (read about who’s attached to the project and more here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/10/sony-pictures-in-talks-for-little-house-on-the-prairie-feature/ )
What do you think of this? A lot of folks love the books and TV show, which arguably made Landon one of best -liked actors in Hollywood during and after its run.

Deadline founder Nikki Finke wonders if, with news that Lance Armstrong has given up fighting US Anti-Doping Agency allegations and will be stripped of his seven Tour de France championships, whether it’s time to relaunch that long-gestating biopic about the inspirational cancer survivor and formerly dominating bicyclist.
Read her thoughts here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/08/lance-armstrong-biopic-now-or-never/
Turns out Nikki is a big fan of the Tour de France and suggests maybe a very different narrative arc is in order on that pic, and that now is the time to move it forward. Interesting, interesting.

NBC and Sony may not have wanted Dan Harmon working on the extremely quirky comedy he created, “Community,” but that hasn’t stopped other networks from jumping at the chance to do business with him since he departed the show in May.
Today, Deadline TV Editor Nellie Andreeva reported that Harmon already has locked up a second deal with another network. It’ll be interesting to see if a) “Community” can maintain its antic and particular energy post-Harmon and b) if Harmon can find a way to strike more sparks with either or even both of his new deals.

Deadline’s Nikki Finke reports that it was a very good week at the box office for web-heads, and for Sony, as “The Amazing Spider-Man” reboots a franchise many fans weren’t sure needed rebooting, even with new actors in the lead roles.

‘Tis the season for animated monster movies, it would appear. Right after Disney unveiled a trailer for its sequel “Monsters University” (out in 2013), comes a rather frenetic but entertaining trailer for Sony’s “Hotel Transylvania.” (We won’t even get into the live actioners, such as the second “Breaking Dawn” movie, whose trailer also peeked out this week).
