Disney and LucasArts are taking a “new direction” in their “Star Wars-related TV ventures, ending “The Clone Wars” and creating a new show in a previously unexplored time in that universe.
Here’s the story: http://www.deadline.com/2013/03/star-wars-lucasfilm-disney-tv-new-direction-clone-wars-ending-on-cartoon-network/
What do you think about this idea? I like the look of “Clone Wars” but wasn’t particularly engaged by it. On the other hand, if they do something interesting like all the stuff that came out of “Knights of the Old Republic,” I’d be pretty jazzed. Thoughts?

strikingtheset:

“Casting Arnold Schwarzenegger as our Terminator, on the other hand, shouldn’t have worked. The guy is supposed to be an infiltration unit, and there’s no way you wouldn’t spot a Terminator in a crowd instantly if they all looked like Arnold. It made no sense whatsoever. But the beauty of movies is that they don’t have to be logical. They just have to have plausibility. If there’s a visceral, cinematic thing happening that the audience likes, they don’t care if it goes against what’s likely.”

Our second collection of the day of screen captures from a just-released trailer for a sci-fi epic set in a post-apocalyptic Earth features yet another major star, Will Smith, with his son, Jaden, in a film from M. Night Shyamalan.

“After Earth” looks kinda cool and certainly beautifully wrought. See the whole thing here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/12/after-earth-trailer-will-smith-m-night-shyamalan-columbia-pictures/

What do you think of the film? Are you looking forward to it more or less than “Oblivion,” the film with Tom Cruise whose trailer screen caps we just posted a bit ago? This one has an interesting set-up, I think, but seems a little more Man v. Nature (or Teen-Aged Boy v. Nature) than “Oblivion,” which looks like Man v. Man Who Isn’t Telling All The Truth.

Lots of screen captures from the just-released trailer for “Oblivion,” a sci-fi post-apocalyptic pic featuring Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo. Check it out here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/12/video-oblivion-trailer-tom-cruise-2/

What do you think? Look interesting?

It’s been a good week for Stephenie Meyer fans: first there was Monday night’s premiere of the last film based on her “Twilight” books, “Breaking Dawn Pt. 2.”

Today, Open Road released the trailer for the movie based on her next book, the alien-invasion love story “The Host.”

Deadline.com has the trailer for your delectation, such as it may be, here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/11/host-trailer-stephenie-meyer-saoirse-ronan-video/

What do you think, Meyer fans? Andrew Niccol, the fellow behind “In Time,” “Gattaca” and other sleek and intriguing sci-fi films, did the screenplay and directed. Will you be camping out for this one next summer when it debuts?

Not a lot of downside in this one, other than a few fried fanboy brain circuits from anticipatory excitement, but Neil Gaiman is back to write another “Doctor Who” episode, showrunner Steven Moffat has confirmed.
It’s been a productive partnership in the past: Gaiman won a Hugo Award (sci-fi’s Oscars (well, along with the Nebulas)) the last time he Who’d it out.
Lots more details on the plan, and the program’s scheduling plans, are on Deadline here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/11/neil-gaiman-to-write-doctor-who-episode-cybermen-return-warwick-davis-harry-potter/

This perfect storm might just get a lot of sci-fi fans buzzing: filmmaker Alex Proyas is trying his hand at TV for the first time, working with Jaime Paglia, long-time creator of SyFy network’s “Eureka” on an ABC show based on Tim Lebbon’s award-winning “Toxic City” trilogy of books. Yeah, might get some folks jazzed up.

Read the details here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/11/alex-proyas-to-produce-direct-abc-drama-project-penned-by-eureka-co-creator/

What do you think about this project? Looking forward to seeing what they do with it?

Here’s a complicated but very interesting question: in all the hosannas over the wisdom of the Disney purchase of LucasFilm and the Star Wars property, does it (and the rest of Hollywood) risk concentrating too much of their product on movies focused in science fiction, fantasy and superhero stories?
Deadline’s Executive Editor David Lieberman essentially asks, have we gone too Comic-Con for our own good? Read his piece here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/10/disney-lucasfilm-star-wars-deal/
And let us know what you think. Has Hollywood concentrated too much of its product on too narrow a slice of offerings?

What is that strange whistling sound? Could it be a harbinger of “The X Files” creator Chris Carter, returning to the sci-fi TV production he once made such a compelling place? It appears to be so, according to Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva.
So, break out your black helicopter and that special iris-changing oil and hie over to Deadline to read more here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/10/chris-carter-to-do-thriller-drama-series-for-georgeville-television/

Director Terry Gilliam’s next project, “The Zero Theorem” (about an eccentric genius trying to understand the meaning of life; who’d expect that from Terry Gilliam?) is adding several more interesting cast members to the previously announced Christoph Waltz, led by David Thewlis and TIlda Swinton

The project is getting more and more intriguing, though that’s always the case, whether Gilliam manages to get a project completed or not (indeed, one he didn’t finish, based on “Don Quixote,” became the subject of a fascinating documentary). Read more about this one on Deadline here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/10/terry-gilliam-sets-david-thewlis-tilda-swinton-for-the-zero-theorem/

So, are you looking forward to this project?
