Deadline is sending some of our best to cover the Cannes Film Festival that opens later this week, and two of them have filed previews about what to expect this year.
Awards Columnist Pete Hammond notes that the past two Cannes fests have spotlights films that later had a big impact on Oscar, and this year - already one of the “most anticipated in years” - should do the same, with lots of high-profile films that will travel well in the United States:

Deadline Film Editor Mike Fleming, meanwhile, says sellers are telling there’s a “good appetite for dealmaking in the air” already, with U.S. rights getting sold on Ryan Gosling’s “How To Catch a Monster.” Lots of other high-profile films from name directors around the world should also attract a lot of deal-making, Mike says here:

So what films are you looking forward to seeing, either there, or when they come out later?

Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. has again cracked that cone of silence surrounding Christopher Nolan’s latest project, the sci-fi epic “Interstellar” penned by his brother initially at the behest of a now-departed Steven Spielberg, inspired by the wormhole theories of a Caltech physicist.
First, Mike found out that Matthew McConaughey would star. Now, Oscar winner Anne Hathaway appears set to rejoin her “Dark Knight Rising” director alongside McConaughey, Mike says.
That’s a pretty good one-two punch for the film, which likely will draw a LOT of interest once it finally emerges from that cone o’ silence of its own volition and everyone else learns what Mike’s been writing about all along.

"Many who wrote asked if there was anything they could do. There is something. If you are lucky enough to still have parents alive, or siblings or other relatives you’ve lost touch with, please make time to call them. See them if you can. Life is so fragile, and at times like this you realize that family, friends, and faith are the only permanent things. And I learned I have those in abundance, and in places I had not anticipated."

Deadline’s Mike Fleming, writing about what matters on his return to work two weeks after the death of his 80-year-old father from head injuries sustained during Hurricane Sandy.

As a colleague of Mike’s now at two different publications, and a member of a far-flung and occasionally slightly dysfunctional family, let me second his thoughts here. Welcome back, Mike. Everyone else, kiss the ones you love, and find the ones you lost track of, and figure out how to make it at least a little better.

Deadline’s Mike Fleming has some tart words for the competition’s story about rumors that Ben Affleck would take on writer/director chores for a devoutly sought Justice League movie: “Don’t dress for that premiere, darling.”

As Mike points out, it’s obvious why the studio would like Affleck, who has wonderfully rebuilt his career into an excellent and critically lauded writer/director, to take on the “Justice League” movie (smells a lot like “Avengers” in DC garb). But there are plenty of reasons why Affleck may not want to don that particular Spandex outfit.

Look out, TV vet Meta Golding is playing a bad guy in the next Hunger Games, tabbed for the role of Enobaria. We’re not sure this is vital information, but there are so many ardent THG fans out there, Deadline’s Mike Fleming wanted to make sure they all knew about this. Read a bit more about the role here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/08/hunger-games-catching-fire-sets-meta-golding-as-enobaria/

Don’t miss Deadline’s Mike Fleming and his lengthy interview with Tony Gilroy, who wrote or co-wrote all three fabulous and fabulously successful Jason Bourne movies.

Now, Gilroy has co-written and directed the spinoff opening this weekend, “The Bourne Legacy,” with Jeremy Renner (see pic below). Gilroy also wrote and directed the terrific “Michael Clayton” a few years back. Suffice it to say, Gilroy knows how to tell a rip-roaring tale.

"In a climate of fear and remakes–is Sony Pictures actually remaking “Jumanji,” a film that came out less than 20 years ago?–it would be grand to see Warner Bros have the stones to take the kind of daring risk that seems only to be taken by the likes of HBO, Showtime, AMC and other pay and cable TV networks. It’s that risk taking that has put those networks in a position of being at the center what will eventually be viewed as a golden age for daring quality TV series."

Deadline’s Mike Fleming, writing about the mammoth film and TV project Warner Bros. is considering, based on Stephen King’s nine-volume “Dark Tower” book series.

With a major casting shift from one Oscar winner to another, a script on the way from an Oscar-winning screenwriter for an Oscar-winning director and producer, this project has all kinds of high-end DNA attached. Now comes the hard part, bankrolling a massive investment, perhaps the biggest since “The Lord of the Rings” hit a moon shot, for about the cost of going to the moon.
