"It’s hard for me to use this as an example people should follow. I knew that as ideas go that this was Haley’s Comet. I just knew Channing in a stripper movie, that’s gold. I wouldn’t do that all the time. I had to borrow money from my accountant in the last month of post. To hold up my end, it took everything I had. I didn’t get out the second mortgages, but it took every dollar I had in the bank."

Steven Soderbergh talks to Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. about betting big on last year’s indie hit “Magic Mike.” He also talks in the extended interview with Mike about “Behind the Candelabra,” the HBO film that Soderbergh says will be his last, featuring Matt Damon and Michael Douglas as Liberace and his lover, Scott Thorson.

It’s really terrific, as always when Mike finds the time in his crazy busy schedule (he’s helping cover the Cannes Film Festival for Deadline right now) for a long takeout with an industry notable. Check it out.

Really, it only SEEMS like Matthew McConaughey is in half the movies this summer (Steven Soderbergh’s “Magic Mike,” William Friedkin’s “Killer Joe”). Now he’s laying in work for next season, with another big director.

It’s Teddy Bear v. Tatum in weekend box office throwdown; first round, both come out swinging

It is ON! Deadline Editor In Chief Nikki Finke says the first round of this weekend’s box office battles is a promising one indeed for the two expected leaders: “Ted” from Seth MacFarlane and “Magic Mike,” starring Channing Tatum and directed by his business partner in the project, Steven Soderbergh. Both came out swinging with strong midnight showings early Friday.

Read more here about the midnight screenings for both and weekend prospects: http://ow.ly/bUZQm

And this all comes on the heels of yesterday’s news, mentioned earlier on our Tumblr feed, that Soderbergh and Tatum are looking at creating a musical based on their man-meat-errific “Mike.”

Ahead of next week’s Emmy nomination voting, up-and-coming Matt Bomer talks about creating his smooth-talking character on USA’s “White Collar,” his guest shot on “Glee” and his role in that formerly “$5 million independent movie” directed by Steven Soderbergh and known as “Magic Mike.” (We already know from the online panting by many of Deadline’s social-media followers that “Mike” promises to be magic indeed)
Here, Bomer talks about his chemistry with co-star Tim DeKay:

“I compare it to two kids who just hit it off on the playground and they come over for a play date and you have to call them in five times for dinner because they don’t want to stop playing. Tim has an amazing sense of humor — he makes me laugh a lot — and he understands my sense of humor… It was this yin-yang that felt really easy and not forced. For me, that was really important in terms of having a long-term dynamic.”

Oh, you shallow people. All we have to do is run the restricted or “red band” trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s “Magic Mike,” which is based on some of star Channing Tatum’s real-life experiences as a male stripper, and you go crazy on social media.
Well, far be it from us to judge, or keep you from seeing the trailer, which apparently has been found to be highly exciting for those with an appreciation for the male form. Yes, we’re shallow, too.
