It’s the kind of story no one would believe if it were a fiction film, but this one, from Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr., is true: a hustling assistant for mega-producer Joel Silver (“The Matrix" among so much else), gets into USC film school on his third try, then fights and claws his way all the way up to getting his first shot as a feature film director, for the upcoming drama "The Dead Men.” He’s in Colombia now preparing to start shooting the film.
Yeah, we’re suckers for these stories too. We can’t help it.
Anyway, this photo is a screen grab from the short film “The Come Up,” by that one-time assistant Kirk Sullivan, who leveraged it into getting his feature debut. We have the whole story from Mike, plus a link to the short film on Vimeo, where it is a staff pick.
